I live in Michigan, now I will try and frequent the Vietnamese grocer in my area! I always feel a lil intimidated by going into specialty grocers, because I’m no sure of how or what to buy, but this was a good tip! Thanks
BTW….I know somewhere I’m part Caribbean! (LOL)

so good to finally have copious info on shado beni. I have lots of recipes that use it and had no idea where to find it or even what it looks like. Especially helpful to learn that it tastes rather like a strong cilantro, that is useful info. Thanks to all you researchers!

Thank you for the video. You are blessed to have most of the fruits and vegetables within your reach, we shop at an Asian market in Colorado,it has very few items, we don’t get callaloo bush so we use one pack of creamed spinach and the frozen cut okra and our callaloo comes out just as tasty. Imagine mangoes have gone from $1.79 to $4.00. what a shame, I will wait until it goes back down. Walmart sells it cheaper but everytime I go there its sold out. Hope I get lucky next time.

    Chris,

Kindly correct your labeling of the avocado be it the Mexican variety or Caribbean. In Trinidad, the other word used for avocado is zaboca.

Further, it is wise and courteous to ask permission beforehand to videotape in another person’s business place. What a missed opportunity!

    Keep up the good work.

Hey Chris – this was a great idea!! I often go into Asian markets like this and wonder what wonderful meals could be made, if I only knew the names of some of these items.
Keep up the great work, I have made quite a few dishes from your website and none have failed me yet!!

Thank you for the video idea and sorry about your security run in.

I guess to counter that when you buy the ingredients you could take photos instead, especially of the herbs!!!
Great idea and attempted execution…maybe you can try for management buy-in next trip!!!
    Keep the good work up.

Super idea! Full marks for creativity . . . and heart.

The next time: Having ensured Management cooperation, take 2 shots of each item: – one medium shot showing the Veggie as it is displayed en masse on the table; then panning-in slowly as someone else picks up the item for a Close tight Shot.
Nice touch w/ editing and adding the name of item. Slower panning will allow us time for reading/writing the name or even an iPod photo of the item.
Keep up the good work, and many thanks.

Loved the tour Chris; I am italian but love all kinds of ethnic cooking. The tour of the veggies was wonderful, maybe add an example for each vegetable's use (the way you did with pumpkin wedges being used for soups). For someone like me, that would be so helpful. The video was a great idea.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the tour. It is nice seeing vegetables from home that we cannot always get over here in NZ. I enjoyed your video except it was a little fast on the panning and not long enough on the products, however i appreciate your effort and thoughtfull ness. As someone said, maybe next time get in with the management and do a deal. It will be nice to see more in the future. Thanks very much and wishing you ther very best of health and happiness and good cooking in 2011. Cheers.

I wish someone would open a West Indian market where I live in Gainesville, FL. The closest thing to a market is the farmers market or this Asian market, but they don't have dasheen, shadow beni, bittermelon and many other items that I have been looking for.

I wish someone would send me a few plants or even the seeds and I would try and grow them myself.

  35. December 24, 2010 / 1:50 am

Nice going, shopping is fun especially when it comes to food

I really enjoyed the trip to the market! I wish you had asked permission to film first, and explained to the manager that this film will let many people from the Carribean and other countries, to know about this market, and get business for him…As someone mentioned the filming was too fast and jerky…yeah, I know you are not a professional. So why not get a professional to film for you, and you'll have the kind of quality you really need. Perhaps you could exchange services in exchange for someone to film for you….Keep up the ideas to enchant us all.

Too bad you were not allowed to finish.
I think it was a great idea to show the veggies.
It’s easy to forget if you left the islands at a young age.
One thing… next time you film, please slow down a bit on each item.
    Thanks again!

  49. June 29, 2009 / 10:10 pm

Actually, I was wondering if you has asked permission to film…probably a good idea…
we also have one of those huge “Asian” stores just down the road from Drupatis in the WalMart plaza. They have got all the ‘ethnic’ stuff there. My friend who lives in Markham says there is a huge store there too…

Reminds me of when I was in France and was taking pics of the cheese section, I too was asked to stop taking pics. (Also a supermarket.) Anyway, back to the video- thanks very much for sharing what you had. It's very helpful to put pictures with names. I liked how you said which was ripe and which was not. I will definitely favorite this and watch a few more times! 🙂
